What a truly amazing week of musical celebrations...congratulations to all of our ECC, Elementary, Middle and Secondary students who showcased their incredible musical talents!  Also, a BIG thanks to Ms. Nikoleta (ECC), Mr. Ioannis (Elementary) and Mr. King (MS/Secondary) for their musical instruction, guidance, leadership and inspiration!

Further, please join us for our annual Music on the Green community picnic on Saturday, 1 June @ 5pm - 8pm.  This is yet another opportunity to enjoy music, food/drink and, most of all, community.

QSI is working with our accrediting body, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA), to accredit QSI as a system. Each of our schools will still be individually accredited, and MSA teams will visit each of our schools to verify that each school meets the standards for accreditation. Additionally, MSA will review QSI’s plans to strengthen our organization and implement organization-wide improvement plans.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER (ECC)
The Frogs started a new unit, Stories and Rhymes. In this unit they will explore traditional as well as modern rhymes and stories. This week we discovered the famous fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children arranged a series of picture cards in chronological order to create the story from beginning to end.  This gave the children a chance to demonstrate and reinforce their recollection of the story.
 
 Afterwards, they picked characters from the story and performed a role-play. Role-play is an important part of child development as it builds confidence, creativity, communication, physical development and problem solving skills. Besides role-play being a fun activity, it also allows children to get into character and act out real life situations or fictional performances. Our Frogs really enjoyed it!

This week the 4 year old students continued to learn about fairy tales.
After reviewing the story folder of Jack and the Beanstalk, the children were able to tell the story using their story props. We also discussed the story from the Giant´s perspective and talked about how the Giant would get back up to his castle if the beanstalk was chopped down. 

By using twisted bulletin board paper we created a beanstalk. Yarn was hung from the ceiling and our Hedgehogs were asked to construct a way for the Giant to get up the beanstalk. The challenge was on! The children loved using wooden blocks and Lego. They also managed to get the Giant back up to his castle.

LOWER & UPPER ELEMENTARY NEWS
The 6 year olds have been exploring the properties of 3-dimensional shapes. This involves experimenting with both flat and curved surfaces. They have taken the engineering skills they have learned in Science throughout the year, and combined this with their knowledge of 3-D shapes to build some amazing towers. They are having fun identifying the shapes real engineers have used to build real buildings. We will spend the next few weeks observing shapes and their properties in order to completely understand the basics of construction.

Students in the 7-year-old Science class are currently learning about plants, their needs, pollination, and the dispersing of seeds.  We have been learning about the many ways that seeds travel and then start new plants.  One fun experiment that we conducted  was to plan and build a tool that mimics the way animals move seeds or pollen.  The students were given some materials such as chopsticks, skewers, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, tape, and straws.  They were then given time to plan with a partner the best way to make a bird's beak that can pick up and move seeds.  After they designed their tool, they built it, and then tested it.  After testing their tool, we had a class competition about whose tool can pick up and move the most seeds in one minute.  We had four different kinds of seeds, and each team was able to try each kind of seed.  During the competition we could really see which groups made a good design, and which ones needed to change something.  All in all, it was a fun experiment and helped us with our understanding of the gathering and dispersing of seeds!

The 9YOs have started their new science unit on Gardening and are really excited to get outside and enjoy being a part of the new QSI garden. For this unit, we are partnering up with Mr. Marek, who has a passion for gardening, and who will be sharing his tips and expertise on how to care for the school garden. The students will learn the essentials of gardening: proper soil, seeds, regular watering, fertilizing with natural ingredients, weeding and caring consistently for the garden throughout this unit. The students will also learn about the different gardening tools and how they are used to improve the soil and allow the plants to grow.  Another aspect of this unit, is teaching the students about composting which is the natural process of decomposition and recycling of organic material (such as leaves, grass, fruit and vegetable scraps) into rich soil. Hopefully, in June, the school might have some beautiful vegetables that were grown without pesticides!

The 10yo students are learning about how energy and matter move through ecosystems. In small groups, the students chose different ecosystems and then created a model to show matter and energy move through that ecosystem. They demonstrated how food chains can overlap to form food webs. We then had a "gallery walk" where the students could view the other projects and compare and contrast the other food webs to their own. The students used many skills including research, application, and analyzation, as well as teamwork.

SECONDARY NEWS
Sustained Silent Reading: You might notice on your students' status reports that some units remain open for the entire school year. One of those units is the Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) unit in 12 year old Literature course. To meet the requirements for this unit, students spend time reading on their own. Each week throughout the year one lesson was devoted to reading a book of each student's choosing. Some students have chosen classics like Number the Stars by Lois Lowry or White Fang by Jack London while others have tried newer selections like Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder by Jo Nesby.  Independent reading is an important component of every student's education and that importance is reflected in the QSI curriculum.

May doesn't seem to be bringing Spring flowers this year, but it brings a lot of testing to our secondary students. Here we see three Sec 3's practicing for their Physics AP exam. Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate  exams are taken and depending on results may help determine college placements and even college credit for certain courses. Each year it seems QSI is offering more and more of these courses that provide our students with the opportunity to get a jump on university. Good luck to all of these students on their big exams!

Humanitarian Club
The Humanitarian Club is made up of middle and secondary students who want to make a difference in our community. In March, we had a collection for sheets, towels, toiletries and more for the Senior Centrum in Old Town. It was a success, with a sizable donation going directly to benefit the patients at the center. In addition to dropping off our donation, we spent some time with the residents singing songs and hanging artwork made by our primary students. In April, we had Daffodil Day. On Daffodil Day, students gather together to stop cancer by selling daffodils in our school. During Earth Week, we offered a planting workshop for primary students. The young ones were able to choose the seeds to plant and take home their very own biodegradable pots of beauty. We are now preparing for our end of year food drive to aid a local homeless shelter. Students Stay Focused as the End of the School Year Approaches
The days are getting longer, the classrooms are getting warmer, and the students occasionally gaze out the window as they contemplate what their teacher just said. Even though summer break is just around the corner, Mr. Plunkett's chemistry students are hard at work - taking every opportunity to learn as the school year comes to an end.

This week in Spanish IB our students are getting ready for an important test that is awaiting them next year. It is the first time they face a mock exam for Spanish. This trial test is helping them to understand how the exam works and practice to get the best possible results next year. 

In Spanish Introductory I, our students are closing their final units by creating a Birthday agenda and practicing all the knowledge they have acquired. The children are enlarging their vocabulary through reading and games.

In Spanish II, we are learning how to use future tense and at the same time practicing the past tenses that we learned in previous units. Each day we practice conjugation and language production.

Above you can have a small dose of the rock n’ roll part of the concert. 11 years old class, one saxophone and many guitars are the proper ingredients for a recipe that will rock your world!
If you are not fan of rock n’ roll do not “Paint it Black”, we have also pop and classic music!!!

QSI elementary students have started the last unit of the school year which is kicking and striking. This unit is targeted to develop a skill rather than a game. Activities include a movement which develop skills like:
-kicking and moving stationary ball by using dominant and non-dominant foot
               -striking stationary and moving ball by a hand
               -striking with a  variety of objects like hands, rackets, hockey sticks, bats and beach balls.
In this unit students are developing manipulative skills and kicking skills by playing games like: floor ball, dodge-ball,
beach volleyball, soccer, baseball and kickball.
