Dear QSI International School of Bratislava Community,

I hope that you all enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing February break.  First off, thank you to the many parents--and children--who attended the Student-involved Parent-Teacher Conferences before the break...what a great turnout!

Secondly, I would like to take this opportunity to request TWO or THREE families to help house the last of 60+ basketball players for this weekend's CEESA JV Boys' Basketball tournament.  We have taken care of 55+ boys, but we need a couple more to show just how warm and welcoming the QSI Bratislava community can be.  Please contact me directly @ daniel-blaho@qsi.org  if you are able to host 2-3 boys for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.  THANK YOU!

Finally, Save the Date:  7 March 2019 @ 6:00pm - 9:00pm we will have our Annual Information Night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.  There will be teachers, students and parents in attendance, along with displays of student work and Informational Sessions on the QSI Academic Program, the International Baccalaureate Program (IB), the Advanced Placement Program (AP), University Counseling & Placement, the Activity & Athletic program, the expanding bus program and much, more more!

Kind regards,
Daniel

STUDENT LIFE

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER (ECC)
It was a fun week in the Hedgehog's class.

During our unit, Choices, the children learned how to make thoughtful choices, smart choices, healthy and also kind choices.   They learned how to evaluate the pros and cons of decision-making and how to generate solutions to problems.
The children sang "Humpty Dumpty" and discussed Humpty's problem (he is broken) and possible solutions. We built the wall using wooden blocks and placed an uncooked egg on top of it.
The children had lots of fun letting the egg fall and crack. We also cut out egg shapes and cut them into puzzle pieces.

They loved using lots of band-aids, glue and tape to put Humpty Dumpty together again.

LOWER & UPPER ELEMENTARY NEWS
The 7-year-old class had a great day last Tuesday celebrating the 100th Day of School in all sorts of ways.  In Math, we played a game to see who could reach 100 first, then we explored all the different ways we can make 100.  We also did 100 exercises, and of course counted to 100.  In Reading and Writing, we read two stories about the 100th Day, and did some writing about what we would look like when we will be 100, and what we would like 100 of (and what we would NOT want 100 of too).  The day ended with an exciting celebration with the 5 and 6-year-olds, delicious 100 Days cupcakes, and certificates celebrating that we are all “100 Days Smarter.” Hooray for the 100th Day of School!

In the 10YO class, we are learning about different types of governments and economies in Cultural Studies. We then get to apply this knowledge to our home countries.  Students are using their research skills to find information and then choosing how they want to present that information: poster, PowerPoint, essay, or a creative option that suits their style. This is always a fun unit because the students learn so much about where they are from.

SECONDARY NEWS
This month in the 12YO Classroom, students started a Book Buddy Group with the Ms. Joanie's 5YO Class.  The older students selected their favorite storybooks to share and support Literacy with the 5's.  In turn the 5's showed off their beginning readers to the older kids, which provided much joy and enthusiasm for both grades!  We cannot wait to return next week, and I have heard that the 5's are just as excited!

Science experiments reinforce the theory that QSI students study during class periods. Experiments stimulate students’ creativity through design, measurement, and analysis of chemical and biological data. Our students already make extensive use of our existing lab facility at QSI. We look forward to the expanded facilities following the move to XBS next year!

The 8-11 YO IE class started this week by learning about the most interesting topic – Food. The students presented a role play where they showed examples of etiquette and manners when hosting a party and inviting friends to come over. This is also a  practical way for students to learn how to identify a sequence of events and to communicate needs orally.  They displayed  effective teamwork for this activity. Everyone did their share, from classroom decoration and  table setting to cleaning up. They certainly satisfied their sweet tooth by getting a homemade chocolate crinkle treat after their hard work.

In February, we introduced an ice-skating unit to our middle school and high school students. We have introduced the basics of ice-skating like: starts, turns, edge work, cross overs and stops. During this unit that will continue until 15th of March, we hope to see improvements in our students' skating.
