Dear QSI International School of Bratislava Community,

We are enjoying the spring rain these past few days, but there was nothing by beautiful sunshine on Saturday at our annual International Brunch.  THANK YOU to all of the parents, teachers, and students who enjoyed the food, drink, and cultural performances from around the world.

Now, we turn our focus towards the end of the school year.  Please continue to support your children as they work towards the completion of their assignments, projects, and units of study.

Enjoy the rest of your week,
Daniel

STUDENT LIFE

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER (ECC)
This week we focused on learning about the seasons in the Hedgehogs class.
The warmer temperatures gave us a great opportunity to get outside and learn about the changing seasons.  We took a walk to the park to see what we could find on The Spring Scavenger Hunt list.  The children were busy searching for flowers, pine cones, rocks, feathers, leaves, grasshoppers, ladybugs, spiders, bees, and much more.  They were very excited to explore different signs of spring and they were able to see, hear, smell and feel spring.

LOWER & UPPER ELEMENTARY NEWS
The 7-year-old Reading and Writing class has been focusing on a book study of the book Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren.   While Mrs. K. reads the story aloud to the class,  the  children are encouraged to visualize, predict, and ask questions about the story line.  After reading, we then analyze the story by writing character descriptions, answering comprehension questions, and drawing pictures to show understanding.  The children all enjoy the story line and can’t wait to see what silly things Pippi will do next!

In the 10yo class, we have started our next science unit, Conservation of Matter. We are exploring questions like, what is matter? And can matter be destroyed? Today we tested this question by dissolving a sugar cube into water and measuring the weight both before and after the sugar dissolved. Then, we could determine if the sugar had actually disappeared. Throughout this unit, we will continue to work on student generated questions and designing experiments to help answer them.

SECONDARY NEWS
Students in the 12 year old Literature course have begun their novel study. The students are reading The Last Book In The Universe by Rodman Philbrick. This book examines the implications of a world that has forgotten how to read and write. It also explores the nature of birthright privilege and the power of love to cross all barriers. Throughout this unit, students will make connections with themes in the Cultural Studies curriculum around the role writing plays in commerce, cultural preservation, and the perpetuation of government.

In Spanish Intro I, we are covering the seasons, the months and activities related. Since Spring is here, we are taking advantage of this good weather by playing games outside to learn new vocabulary (learning verbs is much more fun this way) and also we are using all our previous knowledge (conjugations, prepositions and vocabulary) to talk about things we like to do during the different seasons.

In Spanish II, we are covering past tenses (a really hard topic in Spanish) and reviewing food and gerund. This topic is oriented to get students ready to order their own food during the Barcelona trip.

Our QSIB Physical education department has finished a five lesson unit of ice skating in March.  We were having the 12yo, 13yo, and Secondary 2 classes enjoying ice skating in Hamuliakovo and learning the very basics of ice skating and ice hockey.  This unit has grown a great interest in this winter activity among our students and could be a strong part of our curriculum in future.
Way to skate, bears.

ACTIVITIES

Robotics Club Leaps into Springtime Activities

Building on progress they made during Winter Activities, the Robotics Club continues to innovate new design ideas and programming strategies for their robots. The students concentrated on robot movement during most of their previous robot projects. More recently, they have been designing “attachments” that allow their robots to perform tasks such as moving objects to desired spots on the playing field. With these new abilities, the students will be able to conduct more complex robot missions in the future.
