On March 23, 2018 our elementary QSI Bratislava students capped off Reading Week with an awesome evening/night/morning in the QSI Bratislava library celebrating the fairy tales and the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen! It is a big event since more than 95,000 children from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Kenya, and many others spent a night that was full of fun and adventures.
The Andersen Night at QSIB is the culminating event after the three-month reading program called “Wild About Reading” where all children from the elementary classes 6-11 YO had a chance to collect tokens after reading for a required number of minutes.
We kicked off the night at 5 p.m. with a short quiz about Hans Christian Andersen. After that, we enjoyed crafts and made T-shirts using fabric markers and paints. While doing crafts, most of us got very hungry so we hurried to our Pizza Party. The most exciting part of the night was ahead of us, the game “Flash Tag” in the gym and “Hide and Seek” in the Atrium. All excited, we put on our pajamas for the Pajama Movie Night featuring the movie but played Family Feud or Jeopardy games related to H.C. Andersen, fairy tales and reading.
Ms. Sofija read some scary stories to a few of the bravest listeners while others were exhausted and ready for a good sleep. By 12 o’clock we all were ready for our sleeping bags and soon all fell asleep. In the morning we packed up and had breakfast. Twenty students and teachers left tired but with happy smiles on their faces remembering the adventures of last night!
I would like to thank Mrs. Phillips, Ms. Sofija and Mrs. Varney for their contributions to the night. All of them helped to make it such a wonderful and worthwhile event for our children at QSIB!
