Parent University at QSI Shenzhen: “We aim to empower parents”

Four years ago, Ms. St. Jean-Ali joined the staff at QSI Shenzhen and brought with her the idea of “Parent University” – a parent-centered approach to building community and equipping parents with tools to support their children.

Parent University is held monthly and open to all parents, with one gathering for the Nanshan campus and one gathering for the Shekou campuses (Secondary, Main, and PLE students).  Each Parent University session is two-fold, offering a wellness-centered lesson and an academic-centered lesson.  The sessions are held by the Intensive English Coordinator and the Counselor, often with another teacher specific to the topic.

Wellness topics might include the importance of sleep or helping your child handle anxiety.  Academic topics are often aimed at parents whose children are in the Intensive English program, so they might include a discussion of the various assessment methods used with Intensive English students, or strategies to support reading for pleasure at home.

In addition to Parent University, QSI Shenzhen gathers its parents in many ways throughout the school year.  Each month, parents can attend a “coffee” gathering hosted by the Director of Instruction of their campus, as well as the Director’s Coffee.  These meetings give updates to parents on key projects or events, and they provide an opportunity to discuss relevant topics.

Parents can also join our Parent Support Groups, which support the school in various ways like hosting events and raising funds through the student store.

QSI Shenzhen recognizes that parents can be partners in learning!
