Learning A New Reading Skill: Predicting
Emma Stewart

5-year-old library class. Students are learning to identify the parts of a book (i.e., front & back cover, spine, title page, and spine label) and practicing a new skill called Predicting. Students look at the book cover and predict what the book will be about based on the title. After that, we start our book walk that takes the students through the book and gives them a chance to look at the pictures and predict why characters act a certain way and get an idea of what might be happening and think about words that might be in the book. Then we read the story and see if their predictions were correct. Predicting helps keep the student's mind engaged and gets them to read the book to see if their predictions are correct.
