9YO Science Engineering Practices
Emma Stewart

To start off the year in Science our 9-year-old class began learning about engineering practices. Students worked in groups to identify the problem in a situation and create a solution to this problem. For this scenario students needed to protect a family lost in the woods from a rainstorm. Students created a shelter within the criteria and constraints of the scenario using classroom materials. First, students planned their shelter, created a drawing, and a list of materials needed within the budget. Then, students enjoyed building their designs, testing what worked well and what could be improved. Finally, we tested the shelter designs in their very own rainstorm to see who was successful in keeping their family dry. After testing, students reflected on their design and their understanding of the engineering process. It was great fun to see the students work together as engineers to create solutions to problems!
