COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL: QSI International School of Bishkek is a private, non-profit, coeducational, college-preparatory institution. QSI International School of Bishkek was founded in 1994 in order to provide a quality education for expatriates living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Parents are primarily employed by embassies, corporations, and local governmental agencies. It is a highly mobile community.
ACCREDITATION: QSI International School of Bishkek, ages 2- to 17-year-olds, is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA). It holds membership in the Central and Eastern European Schools Association (CEESA), and is affiliated with the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Schools (AOS).
ENROLLMENT: The school encompasses ages 2 to 17. Students represent a great variety of countries from all over the world.
CURRICULUM: The school follows an American-style college-preparatory curriculum including Advanced Placement (AP) classes. In addition to its scholastic goals, the school endeavors to provide its students with a specialized program including French, Russian, and Kyrgyz languages. Students are provided instruction in the host country culture for those wishing to pursue higher education in Kyrgyzstan.
FACULTY: The school employs 21 full-time teachers plus six part-time teachers. There are seven paraprofessionals, a director, academic coordinator, nurse, librarian, IT manager, administrative assistant, receptionist, accountant, and two intensive English instructors. Part-time and full time teachers provide instruction in Art, Music, P.E., IT, Library, and Languages. The school has 24-hour security provided by guards and cameras. There are also maintenance and custodial personnel.
PHILOSOPHY: QSI International School of Bishkek believes in a personalized approach to instruction leading to mastery within a positive and enjoyable learning environment. It offers a challenging academic curriculum for students ages 2 through Secondary IV (17-year-olds). Studies are tailored to meet the individual needs of students.
GRADING SYSTEM: Mastery of each essential unit is evaluated with an A or B. B represents mastery at a very good level, and A represents mastery with the student demonstrating higher-order thinking skills. Mediocre or poor work, Cs and Ds, is not accepted, as students are required to engage in an essential unit until they achieve mastery. If a student has mastered a unit with a B evaluation, the student may wish to demonstrate a higher level of mastery at a later time, within that current school year, to change the evaluation to an A. Time periods (quarters, semesters, terms) are not evaluated; student performance for the school year is assessed on each essential unit in which a student is engaged.
CLASS RANK: Due to the mobility of QSI students and the relatively small graduating classes, as well as the variety of educational systems from which students come, student class rankings are not reported.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: The Academic Diploma With Honors is the most advanced diploma offered by Quality Schools International. Requirements are the same as The Academic Diploma but with the added condition that accumulated credits include at least two Advanced Placement (AP) courses (ten credits each). A total of 240 credits are required for this diploma.
For students to graduate with an Academic Diploma, the minimum requirements are 24 Carnegie units or 240 QSI credits in the following areas of concentration: English 8 cr., Mathematics 3 cr., Science 3 cr., Cultural Studies 4 cr., Personal Health .5 cr., Languages 2 cr., Fine Arts 1 cr., Creative & Applied Arts (elective credits).
The General Diploma is available to students experiencing English language difficulties, time restraints, or other challenges that make it impractical to pursue an academic diploma. This diploma is designed for students requiring a sound general secondary education. The basic minimum requirements are 220 Carnegie units or 22 credits: English 5 cr., Mathematics 2 cr., Science 2 cr., Cultural Studies 3 cr., Personal Health .5 cr., Languages 2 cr., Fine Arts 1 cr., Creative & Applied Arts (elective credits).
