    Athletic Corner

    Greetings AIS Community,

It has been a fantastic couple of weeks of athletics at AIS for our Fall sports.  If you have not heard from the coach, please communicate with me, and we will make sure to send along the “Welcome” and other relevant information.

Cross Country has been training hard and participated in a friendly meet with Tien Shan International School Friday, 14 September.  The XC team is currently in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan at CAXC.  We have 13 runners participating in 2 days of running events.  Wish them luck!

The soccer season is half done (almost).  We had a terrific opening weekend of games on Saturday, 15 September at AIS.  There are over 500 people at AIS on Saturdays playing and support our younger soccer players.  If you have not seen it, stop by for an excellent site.

AIS is lucky to be hosting so many games this year.  It cuts down on our travel, and we have the delicious food available from our concessions stand.  Please come to support our student-athletes.  Wear blue.  Cheer loudly, cheer proudly, and encourage all participants.

The COASH league has its final games 8-12 October.  Please use the COASH website for the most up-to-date schedule. Games change regularly.

Information and sign-ups for Winter sports (badminton, basketball, swimming, table tennis, and more) will be available soon.  Keep your eyes and ears open and support the AIS community.

Please do not hesitate to communicate.  I look forward to seeing you on the sidelines.

    Sincerely,
    Patrick Binder

    Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)

    Dear Parent,

During the weeks of September 24 – October 5, your child will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on a computer. We give students MAP Growth tests to determine their instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year (and from year to year) in Mathematics, Reading, and Language Arts.

MAP Growth tests are unique in that they adapt to your child’s level of learning. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This results in a detailed picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level.

Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.

MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, subject and have the same starting performance level. Each school year, students in 5 and 6-year-old classes take the tests in Mathematics and Reading, and 7 through Secondary 2 take the tests in Mathematics, Reading and Language Arts. Following each testing period, you will receive a report showing your child’s growth, which you can review with your child’s teacher for more insight.

We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about the MAP Growth test, visit NWEA.org/Parent-Toolkit.

    Sincerely,
    Irina Mussayeva
    MAP Testing Coordinator

    October 15-19, 2018

    Athletic Corner

    Greetings AIS Community,

A friendly note to inform you that there are no athletic or after-school activities on Monday, 15 October because of staff training.  Please make any adjustments necessary and thank your understanding.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Fall sports at AIS are beginning to wrap up.  It has been an intense couple of months.
Cross Country did very well in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan at CAXC.  Varsity Girls earned the 3rd place as a team, and Varsity Boys captured 1st place!  Juanse Garcia Castillo captured 1st, and Jadin Whiting won 3rd in both the 3km and 5km events.

Cross Country is currently in Moscow, Russia at a Central and Eastern European Schools Association (CEESA) event.  There are 6 Varsity Boys and 1 Varsity Girl competing in the 2 days of competition—Friday and Saturday.  Wish them the best.

The soccer season is finishing COASH playoffs this week.  AIS Tulpar (U9) earned 5th place.  AIS Kyran (U12) A team won their pool in a thrilling 2-0 victory over the International School of Almaty (ISA), while AIS Kyran B team finished fourth in their pool.

The AIS Junior Varsity Girls team earned 3rd place in their division with a well-deserved victory over Kazakhstan International School 2-1.  AIS had a Junior Varsity Boys A and B team in COASH.  AIS JV boys A team finished 5th and the B team finished 6th overall.

The Varsity Girls earned the 3rd place with a 5-0 victory over Nazarbayev Intellectual School (Chemistry/Biology).  Varsity Boys won the 3rd place after defeating Nazarbayev Intellectual School (Physics/Math) 5-2.

The playoffs have been at AIS and Haileybury throughout this past week.  Thank you to all who cheered, made the journey to Haileybury, and supported the AIS community.  It has been an exciting end to the COASH soccer season.

The Central Asia Soccer Classic (CASC) is just around the corner—right after Fall Break.  AIS and TSIS co-host it.

Wednesday night (31 October) is the opening of CASC.  There will be games that night for JV and Varsity boys and girls soccer teams.  There will be events and activities throughout the night to help open CASC.  Please put the night in your calendar.  More information will come.

Information and sign-ups for Winter sports (badminton, basketball, swimming, table tennis, and more) will be available next week.  Keep your eyes and ears open and support the AIS community.
