SECONDARY (11 year olds – S4) MUSIC DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY

Any musical organization or ensemble serves as a laboratory for students of music performance.  Foremost among the objectives of an ensemble is to provide students with the opportunity to become intimately acquainted with music literature, and to develop a love for and understanding of music.

Participation in an ensemble should provide a self-satisfying level of proficiency and achievement as well as a strong basis for further musical enrichment, either with continued study or as an avocation.

Any musical organization places emphasis on the refinement of the basic fundamentals of performance, both individually and as a group, and development of discriminating listening skills.  Since the majority of its members will not be professional musicians, the program strives to produce intelligent consumers of music with an appreciation of the arts as a form of communication and self-expression.

In addition to these basic objectives, participation in a musical ensemble develops leadership and responsibility, cooperation, self-discipline, self-motivation and cultural awareness.  Participation through rehearsal and performance should lead the student to recognize the unique contribution of music as an art form.

The Almaty International School recognizes few school musicians make music a career. However, the mental discipline and thought processes required in the study of music are applicable in all fields of endeavor.
