Message from Director

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had wonderful holidays. It was great to hear teachers and students alike say how ready they were to be back at school!

We have many exciting projects beginning in the classrooms and new units opened in each class. There are also new ASA’s, activities, sports and trips beginning this month as well.

Over the holiday the school servers and computers were all updated. The computer lab was reconfigured (please drop by and see it!) to make it a more teachable space. An additional heating and cooling system was placed in the gym to help out the current system.

The Child Protection Team for the school is now in place and is comprised of the Counselor, teachers from each level and the Director. This group will monitor any issues that may arise during the year. The American RSO is also on call for any questions or concerns we may have.

The MSA Middle States Accreditation mid-term report was submitted in December. Many thanks to Cheryl Vogler who took on the huge project of putting all the committees work and five year plans into one document.

Basketball season is underway, and we are looking forward to hosting the Tbilisi Classic again, February 14-16. Our new Athletic Director, Josh Danos, will be handling all the arrangements along with Michaela. The finals will be here at QSIT on Saturday the 16th. Please plan to come and cheer! Later in the season the Sec girls will be going to Sarajevo and the boys will have their tournament here.

The PSG is busy planning both the Wine and Cheese night for parents on February 8 and supporting International Week March 11-15. You will be hearing much more about these events soon.

Each age group is planning their community service project through Roots and Shoots. They will let you know through the newsletter all the wonderful contributions they are making for our community.

We hope to see you all soon!

Transitioning from Music to Drama
January 28th is the end of the first semester at QSI Tbilisi. Our 12 and 13 year old students will be transitioning from music to drama as one of their creative arts. The drama class will culminate with a production in the month of May, and will be taught by Ms. Kiara Brooks.

Music will still be available for those interested, but it will only be offered as an option during scheduled two activity periods per week. Those 12 and 13 YO students wishing to continue with their instrument should contact Ms.Tamuna to find out which days band will be offered during activity periods.

Students should sign up for band on their activity forms, coming out next week.
QSI Tbilisi would like to invite you to the upcoming science symposium that will be conducted by our science students on January 31, 2019. Kindergarten through high school students will be presenting completed science projects. This year our students will be focusing on engineering strategies supported by Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) exploring concepts through physical science.

The following is a schedule for presentation times:
11:20 until 12:05 p.m for level 5 through 7 students
12:50 until 1:50 p.m. for level 8 through 10 Students
1:50 until 3:00 p.m. for Middle and High School Students
Roots & Shoots
Students FUNdraising for Charity
Our Roots and Shoots Tbilisi students have been busy organizing fundraisers for local charity. Roots and Shoots is a global non-profit organization started in 1991. The goal is to bring together young people to help others. In August 2018, QSIT Roots and Shoots took the role of being in charge of all QSI community service activities, which are now all student-oriented and student-led. We are helping local organisations that students find need it; from dog shelters to orphanages.

Baskets for better
Students in 9W completed their first Roots and Shoots campaign fundraiser just before the holidays. We are happy to announce that their bake sale was a success. The sale earned 495 Georgian lari for their Baskets for Better campaign. They will be using these funds to continue working to support multiple groups in the community.

Terrific Tetri Drive
Our Tetri Drive Before the holidays turned out to be a terrific FUNdraiser for the Roots and Shoots organisations. In total all classes collected 1900 Georgian Lari. Roots and Shoots students are excited to support their chosen organisations in need with these funds.

Wheels of Hope
The preschool classes also completed a campaign fundraiser. Their campaign, Wheels of Hope, made ornaments that were sold at the Winter Bazaar held here at QSI Tbilisi. They made 310 Georgian Lari, which they will later donate to Caritas supporting their disability van repair. They will invite the van to come to school and present the donation to Caritas in the near future.

If you have questions about Roots and Shoots activities, we encourage you to check out the website: http://www.rootsandshoots.org/  or contact Jason Martin, Mentor, at jason-martin@grg.qsi.org.
