QSI Bratislava - The Green Ribbon Ceremony

QSI International School of Bratislava

Each year, the QSI Bratislava community gathers to celebrate the graduating class by handing out green ribbons to the SEC IV students. The celebration of green ribbons, known as stužková slávnosť, is a tradition in Slovak high schools, with the first green ribbon given to a Slovak student in the city of Banská Štiavnica in the 19th century as a symbol of youth and hope. This tradition was celebrated elsewhere in Europe even earlier. By wearing these ribbons, students make it clear that they are making a transition from childhood to adulthood.

Teachers and administrators give students encouraging remarks to enter their new stage of life with courage and a readiness to accept responsibility. Students then give thanks to their parents for supporting them along the way and distribute flowers to their teachers in gratitude for their education. The ceremony is a senior rite of passage and a recognition of the whole community coming together to support teaching and learning.
