Dear Graduates,

As many of us gather to celebrate your incredible achievements and the bright futures ahead of you, I am reminded of a song by Tim McGraw titled "Humble and Kind." Its lyrics resonate profoundly, especially at this pivotal moment in your lives.

As international students, you have navigated not just the rigors of your academic programs but also the complexities of living far from home- whatever 'home' means. You've embraced new cultures and built bridges across continents. In the spirit of Tim McGraw’s words, "You know there's a light that glows by the front door," you have each been a beacon of diversity and understanding within our communities.

"Hold the door, say please, say thank you." These simple acts of kindness and respect have great power. They reflect who you are and echo through your actions towards others. Today, as you stand on the cliff of the next chapter of your lives, remember the importance of these small courtesies. They pave the way for greater interactions and deeper connections.

"Don't steal, don't cheat, and don't lie." Integrity is the cornerstone of all you undertake. As you climb your mountains—those personal and professional challenges that await—let the integrity that brought you here guide your way forward.

"When the dreams you're dreaming come to you, when the work you put in is realized, let yourself feel the pride but always stay humble and kind." Celebrate your achievements, embrace your successes, and always remember where you started. The humility to recognize the contributions of others to your success, and the kindness to appreciate those contributions, will make you extraordinary.

To those who feel they have received a "free ride from no one," remember that self-reliance is a strength. However, it is also essential to acknowledge that none of us succeed alone. We stand on the shoulders of the generations before us and the support of those around us. "Don't take for granted the love this life gives you," and when you reach your goals, "don't forget to turn back around and help the next one in line."

As Tim McGraw sings, "When it's hot, eat a root beer popsicle, shut off the AC and roll the windows down." Take time to enjoy the simple pleasures. Let these moments refresh you and remind you of life’s beauty beyond work and ambition.

Graduates, as you step forward into new beginnings, carry these words with you. Let them be a guide to stay grounded and kind-hearted. The world is vast, and your contributions are needed more than ever. Always stay humble and kind, not just as a practice, but as a way of life.
