Academic Subjects

QSI International School of Dongguan offers a performance-based, mastery-learning educational program with a curriculum similar to that of U.S. public and private schools in order to prepare students for university. Instruction takes advantage of small class sizes and the diverse educational backgrounds of the students. All instruction is in the English language.  Elementary School students participate in a full program of Mathematics, Reading, Language Arts, Science, Cultural Studies, Art, Music, Library, and Physical Education.

Academic Schedule

Elementary level students have eight period days, comprised of a double period of English that focuses on reading, grammar, composition, and spelling.  The Literacy Focus program, which is an extension of our reading program, is provided three days a week for students in the 6 to 11 years old classes. It addresses specific reading skill deficits in phonics, fluency, and comprehension for students who have been assessed and did not show mastery in those skills, or provides literacy extension activities for students who are reading above level.  The core subject of mathematics is studied each day and other subjects are studied two or three times a week, namely: science, cultural studies, art, music, computer, and physical education. Computer usage is integrated with the curriculum at all levels through an IT class as well as within the classroom. Students take Chinese language and culture as either a native speaker or as a second language four days a week.

Learning at the Appropriate Level

Students are grouped in achievement levels for mathematics, reading, and language arts. These subjects are taught at the same time of the day, giving opportunity for students to move from group to group as appropriate for their achievement level. Grouping students of similar ability in these core subjects academically challenges students but does not overwhelm them. The Performance-Based approach to education makes it possible for each individual to make rapid progress toward mastering subject material and enables the gifted and talented to move ahead seamlessly. Parallel to the standard core lessons is an Intensive English program for those not ready for mainstreaming into the regular school program.

Elementary School Activities (ESA)

After school activities are offered 2 days a week during 8th period (3:00 – 3:45) and are geared to the interests of students.  In the past, activities such as capoeira, kung fu, orchestra, choir, yoga, hip-hop and Indian dance, girl scouts, and soccer have been offered.
